About the project

A complete digital platform for a modern media outlet

M portal is a Montenegrin news portal available on the web and through iOS and Android apps. Slap IT DOO is listed as the app's developer in the official records of the Apple App Store and Google Play. Unlike a simple corporate website, a serious media portal requires a whole set of systems working together every day, without interruption — a custom design built for news, an editorial admin system, mobile apps, content distribution through notifications, and the infrastructure that carries all of it. That's exactly what M portal is: a complete digital platform, not just a website.

Custom media portal design

Design built for news.

M portal wasn't built on a generic news template. A media portal's design has different requirements than a classic corporate website — it has to simultaneously organize a large volume of daily information, a clear news hierarchy, distinct content categories, highlighting of top stories, fast access to the latest information, a view of the most-read content, photos and multimedia, related articles and ad placements — all while staying easy to read and delivering a solid experience on mobile. The interface has to organize a large amount of content so that a visitor understands, within a few seconds, what's new, what's important, and where to find the content they're interested in.

Web · iOS · Android

A portal that goes with the reader.

A modern media outlet can't be tied to the browser alone. That's why we didn't build M portal as a website with an app bolted on — we built it as a single digital ecosystem: a web portal, an iOS app and an Android app that all give the reader the same content through an experience suited to whatever device they're currently using.

Push notifications

The news doesn't wait for the user to open the app.

For a media outlet, the speed of distributing information can matter as much as the speed of publishing it. Push notifications let an important story reach the user's device directly, instead of waiting for the reader to open the app on their own. Notifications in the M portal app are linked to a specific article — tapping the notification opens exactly that story, even when the app is fully closed. That closes the full loop: the newsroom publishes, the system distributes, the user receives the information, the app opens the content.

Behind the portal

What the reader sees is only half the system.

For the reader, M portal is a place to read the news. For the newsroom, behind every published article sits a system that has to let information be created, edited, positioned, published and distributed quickly and reliably. A portal is only as fast as its newsroom — so alongside the public side of the platform, we also built a functional admin system that lets the editorial team manage content simply and quickly, every day.

Admin system

A CMS for the newsroom's daily work

For a media portal, the admin system isn't a side detail of the project — it's the heart of it. The newsroom has to be able to publish information quickly, especially for breaking or urgent news. Slap IT built a CMS for M portal that gives the newsroom a simple process: creating articles, editing content and photos, organizing by category and author, positioning on the homepage, and publishing.

Ad space

Editorial content and commercial space in one system.

A serious media portal isn't just a system for publishing articles — it also has to make managing digital ad space straightforward. Slap IT built an admin system that lets the newsroom manage banners and ad placements across the portal. Ad space is visible on M portal in several positions — on the homepage, inside categories, and alongside individual articles — and is actively used in the portal's day-to-day operation, something we could confirm directly by reviewing the portal's publicly available pages.

Analytics

Content that can be measured.

Beyond publishing content, the admin system also gives the newsroom visibility into how that content is being read. A view of traffic and readership helps the editorial team understand what the audience cares about and how content is being consumed, with visibility into current and most-read stories — the same principle the reader sees through "Latest" and "Most read" on the portal itself, available to the newsroom in a broader, administrative form.

Security comes first

A media portal has to be available. And protected.

When building a media platform, security isn't an extra feature considered after the project wraps up — it's part of the system's architecture. Media portals are publicly accessible, handle a high volume of requests, have administrative users, and serve as an important communication channel. That's why security, access control, protecting the admin system and system stability are among the key technical priorities on every project of this kind we take on.

Infrastructure

The news doesn't keep office hours.

A media portal has to be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. When a major story breaks, that's exactly when reader interest can spike the most — and that's the moment the infrastructure can't afford to fail. For M portal, particular focus was placed on system stability, reliable operation, performance, content availability and security, so the platform stays available and dependable regardless of traffic volume.

More than what the reader sees

A media portal is much more than what the reader sees.

A modern digital media outlet requires a combination of design, speed, simple editorial administration, mobile apps, content distribution, stable infrastructure and security. M portal is an example of our approach to building media systems — from the first screen the reader sees to the admin system the newsroom uses every day.

One platform. Multiple channels. A continuous flow of information.
